Diabetic Foot Care

Diabetes affects foot health, but most issues are preventable. Care for your feet daily—your health depends on it!

Here at The Arch Foot Clinic, we know diabetes can affect many aspects of your life, and healthy feet are crucial for overall well-being. That's why diabetic foot care is a top priority.

Why is diabetic foot care so important?
Diabetes can cause nerve damage (neuropathy) and reduced blood circulation, making it harder to feel injuries or notice changes in your feet. This can lead to serious complications, including ulcers, infections, and even amputation.

The good news? Diabetic foot problems are largely preventable! With proper care, you can significantly reduce your risk.

Here's what you can do to keep your feet healthy:

  • Daily foot checks: Look for cuts, blisters, swelling, redness, or changes in skin colour. Use a mirror if needed, or ask a loved one to help.
  • Washing and drying thoroughly: Wash your feet daily with warm (not hot) water and mild soap. Dry them carefully, especially between the toes.
  • Moisturising: Prevent dry, cracked skin with a fragrance-free moisturiser, but avoid applying between the toes.
  • Comfortable footwear: Choose well-fitting shoes with good arch support and a wide toe box. Avoid tight-fitting shoes or going barefoot.
  • Healthy diet and exercise: Manage your blood sugar levels with a balanced diet and regular exercise as recommended by your doctor.
  • Regular podiatry appointments: Schedule regular check-ups with a podiatrist who can assess your feet for any potential problems and provide tailored advice.

Remember: Early detection is key! If you notice any changes in your feet, don't hesitate to contact your podiatrist or GP straight away.

Bonus tips:

  • Trim your toenails carefully: Cut straight across with clippers and avoid cutting them too short.
  • Beware of hot water bottles and saunas: Reduced sensation can increase the risk of burns.
  • Stop smoking: Smoking can further restrict blood flow to the feet.

Taking care of your feet is an investment in your future health and mobility. By following these simple steps, you can keep your feet happy and healthy for years to come!
