Winter Foot Care: Tips to Keep Your Feet Warm, Healthy, and Happy

Winter care to keep your feet healthy and warm.

Foot care in winter

During the colder months, a variety of typical foot issues tend to emerge. As podiatrists, we often notice a rise in cases involving corns, ingrown toenails, dry or cracked skin, and discomfort in the lower limbs.

Minor foot concerns can frequently worsen throughout the winter season. This is because we tend to keep our feet concealed and may not detect early indicators or provide them with the necessary care and attention. Here are some tips to keep your feet in good condition -

  • During the chilly weather, it's crucial to ensure your feet stay warm by donning cozy socks and protective footwear. Choose shoes that provide complete enclosure and sturdy soles for extra protection.
  • Woolen socks are an excellent choice as they offer added warmth and insulation. Cold-induced conditions like chillblains, which manifest as painful and itchy red lumps on the toes, can cause discomfort. Although generally harmless, they may indicate compromised circulation in certain individuals and should not be entirely disregarded. If you have diabetes, heart problems, or vascular conditions, you might be at a higher risk for these issues and should consider seeking guidance from a healthcare professional.

  • While the temptation to warm your feet by a fire when returning from the cold is understandable, it's advisable to be cautious, as this can potentially lead to burns and blisters.
  • Keeping feet clean and dry. Maintaining foot cleanliness and thorough drying is crucial throughout the year to prevent conditions like fungal infections. Nonetheless, during the winter, it becomes especially essential to be diligent with your foot hygiene due to the increased risk of dry skin and heel fissures. If your feet are exposed to a warm and moist environment, such as inside winter boots, the likelihood of developing a fungal infection is heightened.
  • Keep moving! Sustaining regular physical activity can diminish leg swelling, alleviate joint stiffness, and enhance blood circulation in your lower limbs. So, set aside the snug blanket and maintain your body's warmth by engaging in at least 30 minutes of daily movement.
